Trying to keep your little one entertained for Halloween? It’s true that nothing beats the trick or treat experience, but there’s much more you can do to make their celebration even better. Apart from a few good movies (not too scary though), you can also consider books.

Books stimulate kids’ imagination and once they’re hooked in, they’re guaranteed to give you a break for a few good hours. These being said, let’s go through some of the best rated Halloween books for 10 year old out there.

Room on the Broom, by Julia Donaldson (2003)

You can’t go wrong with Room on the Broom, I think it’s a classic among the best Halloween books for kids. The story follows a witch and her cat as they fly running errands, but a nasty wind starts out of nowhere and that’s when the adventure begins.

Things start flying off, so they need to search for them. But as they struggle to find everything that’s missing, they also make a lot of new friends in this new adventure.

Will there be enough room on the broom for everyone? Only one way to find out!

Spooky Pookie, by Sandra Boynton (2017)

The spooky Halloween celebrations are quickly approaching, but Pookie has a problem. What’s the best costume for this Halloween? Figuring out what to dress up is a challenge for every kid out there, so your little one will definitely relate to it as well.

This is by far one of the best Halloween books for 5 year old, yet your little one may need a bit of help reading it. However, it’s guaranteed to put a smile on their face and who knows, it may even help your little one with a few ideas for dressing up too.

The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat, by Stan & Jan Berenstain (1989)

This book may not feature some of the modern characters kids see and appreciate in today’s cartoons, but it’s still a classic and a longtime favorite among youngsters. From this point of view, it’s likely to impress your little one too.

The story follows a little community as it struggles with a situation. In a funny way, of course!

Tykes loves spending Halloween in Bear Country, only to see what bears prepare and how they dress up. But an unexpected situation kicks in out of nowhere and turns everything into chaos when someone plays a prank.

This engaging story is not just fun to read but it will teach your little one an important lesson about bouncing back from challenges, solving problems, and the value of friendship and understanding.

Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody, by Michael Rex (2012)

Most Halloween books for 10 year old feature scary characters and funny stories, some of them with a bit of meaning behind them as well. But this story by Michael Rex is slightly different. If your little one is already familiar with the Goodnight Moon classic, they’ll love the Halloween version too.

This book shows everyone how ghosts prepare for bedtime. It follows a series of different characters as they get ready to go to bed. I found it quite useful, especially since I always used to struggle getting my little one to bed.

Besides, I still refer to it every now and then when problems arise.

I know it’s a book for kids, but it’s about something no one ever thinks about. Quite fun!

What Was I Scared Of?, by Dr. Seuss (2009)

Another classic! Every parent out there should have this book ready for this special time of the year because they just can’t go wrong with it. It was a top favorite among different generations of kids and believe me, it’s just as actual and exciting today.

The story is quite funny. The narrator is scared by a pair of pants. But the pants aren’t too scary at all. In fact, they’re also afraid of the narrator.

It’s a silly book that will get your little one to ask questions. Besides, it teaches them what tolerance and fear actually mean, so it’s a good opportunity for them to relate to things they’re usually afraid of.

Silly, funny and educational, you can’t go wrong with it!

Little Witch, by Anna Elizabeth Bennett (2013)

This is one of the best Halloween books for kids and just like others on my list, it’s one of those that will be actual for many, many generations. In fact, it’s so good that I think they transpose it into a movie as well.

Anyway, this book follows a witch who’s not that eager to be a witch. In fact, she’d like to go to school, just like any other kid.

If your little one hates going to school or kindergarten, this book will definitely give them something to think about. It follows Minx, a nine-year-old witch who sneaks into a traditional school, causing all kinds of unfortunate events.

Through Minx’s eyes, children can learn the importance of being themselves and exploring new experiences with an open mind.

How to Make Friends with a Ghost, by Rebecca Green (2017)

This book worked like magic on my little one, especially given the obsession with the world renowned Casper, the friendly ghost. If your kid is fascinated by ghosts, chances are they’ll love this story, which has a self-explanatory title.

The book takes us through a series of ways to befriend a ghost. For instance, a good way to do it is to have ghosts’ favorite snacks around, such as earwax or mud tarts. It’s gross, I know, but it’s dead funny and puts your little one in the right spirit for Halloween.

Leo: A Ghost Story, by Mac Barnett (2015)

This book is similar to Casper’s story. It follows Leo, a ghost who often feels lonely. The house he haunts is empty at the moment, but he’s excited to find out that new people will be moving in. He’s not interested in scaring anyone, but he’s actually trying to make some new friends.

Anyway, he’s usually invisible for most people. When a new family moves in, he’s trying his best to make them feel comfy and welcome in their new home. Unfortunately, he’s clumsy and doesn’t really understand how people work, so he ends up spooking them whenever he tries to make a connection.

But things change one day, when he finds a friend who’s not that frightened.
